I hope this email finds you well. My name is Jude Johnson, and if you don't remember, you assessed our building on Monday. I was wondering if you would be willing to meet with me on Saturday at 10 AM to discuss another business venture.

The email client automatically added his credentials, and then he sent the message as their long-time kitchen servant placed a plate of collard greens, cornbread, and baked chicken in front of him.

“Good, stick-to-your-bones food.” His father smiled. “All this new healthy-food rhetoric is just marketing. If you want to live for a long time, this is the kind of food you need.” The man pointed his fork toward the food. “You’re never too rich to eat good down-home southern cooking.”

“Sure, Daddy,” Jude’s sister giggled. “You still have high blood pressure and high cholesterol.”

“But I’m sixty-five years old. Of course, I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol.”

Jude poked at his food, eating his cornbread first and swirling his collard greens around his plate. He loved vegetables, but these were under seasoned and overcooked.

“Honey, you should still take care of yourself. I am sixty-three, and I don’t have high cholesterol,” Jude’s mother teased.

His father responded with a sharp, playful retort, inspiring laughter from Jude’s mother and sister, but Jude wasn’t listening. His father’s jokes were hardly funny, but also, his cell phone buzzed in his lap, and he glanced down at it.

A new email message.

Jude’s heart jumped into his throat. He had just sent the message to Sebastian not even twenty minutes ago, could he truly be responding so quickly? Or perhaps was it one of the numerous marketing emails Jude had his assistant cycle through and delete?

“Jude,” his father’s stern voice cut through his worries, and he flicked startled eyes up at him.

“What?”

“You can’t put your phone away for five minutes while we eat?”

“Ah. Well yes, yes I can, but I am expecting an important correspondence from someone. It can’t wait.”

His father lifted dark eyebrows. “What sort of correspondence?”

“I am asking the electrician my assistant hired to repair the building how far along he is in his progress,” Jude lied.

His father gave him a discerning glance, but was none the wiser to the truth, and gave Jude a curt nod. “Well, carry on, then.”

“Mm,” Jude murmured.

“But eat your food and stop swirling it around your plate like you’re a toddler.”

“I will.” He rolled his eyes, taking a reluctant bite from the collard greens as he unlocked his cell phone. The loading indicator spun, loading the subject of the message and the sending information first.

Yes, it was from Sebastian Ward. The subject was a direct reply to Jude’s. He took another bite of the greens as the message finally loaded, and all of his anxiety sailed out of him. The message was brief and to the point, but it said everything it needed to say.
